HOW MUCH CHALK WOULD BE SAVED IF ONLY INTERACTIVE TEACHING WAS USED INSTEAD OF MASTER CLASSES? (In Valencian Colleges)

TOPIC

The aim of this microsearching is to clarify the total amount of chalk, measured in packs, that the 5 universities of Valencia would save if instead of blackboards they only used newer technologies and methodologies.


DATA

Colleges in Valencia:
  -UCV (Universitat Católica de València Vicente Màrtir)
  -UV (Universitat de València)
  -UPV (Universitat Politècnica de València)
  -ETS (Escola Tècnica Superior)
  -CEU (Universitat Cardenal Herrera)

Aproximation of chalk packs used in every college per month:
  -UCV: 3 aprox.
  -UV: 6 aprox.
  -UPV: 29 aprox.
  -ETS: 14 aprox.
  -CEU: 20 aprox.


CALCULATIONS

  -An academic year lasts 9 months
  
      -UCV: around 27 chalk packs are used
             
          3*9 = 27
   
      -UV: around 54 chalk packs are used
           
          6*9 = 54
      -UPV: around 261 chalk packs are used

          29*9 = 261

      -ETS: around 126 chalk packs are used

          14*9 = 126

      -CEU: around 180 chalk packs are used

          20*9 = 180

-And now, to approximately know the total amount of chalk employed within the colleges of  Valencia, we make the addition of every result that we have already operated:

    27 (UCV) + 54 (UV) + 261 (UPV) + 126 (ETS) + 180 (CEU) = 648 chalk packs


So, we can conclude that 648 is the amount of chalk packs that are used in an academic year by all colleges in Valencian Community approximately, which is still a very high number considering all the other possible materials that we can use instead of it.

Conclusion:

You have to take into account that the results of this estimation depend on  methodology used, the creativity employed  and the resources of each center. Even that nowadays most of the classes have their TIC equipment,  many teachers prefer to use blackboard and chalk instead of all this modern support material (“ power point”,  “smart board”, “prezzi” etc).

That is why we are using so much packs of chalk. Another reason could be that most of the teachers aren’t young enough to feel comfortable with this new tecnologies.

According researches from the University Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona, there is a higher risk of having respiratory diseases for teachers in classes where chalk is used. In fact,the risk is 5 times higher than normal.

In our opinion is that the reason why we should reduce the amount of chalk used in our master classes.
